Bio

Belgian mezzo-soprano Julie Phan developed her vocal technique with Eunice Arias before continuing her studies with Benoît Giaux, Ana-Camélia Stefanescu, and Elise Gäbele at the Institut de Musique et de Pédagogie in Namur, where she also studied transverse flute with Denis-Pierre Gustin. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance, she pursued advanced studies in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne with Raimund Nolte and Christoph Prégardien. There, she specialized in the interpretation of German Lieder and French mélodie, as well as in operatic repertoire. She was subsequently admitted to the prestigious Konzertexamen program in Cologne, allowing her to further refine her artistry under the guidance of Kai Wessel.

Alongside her operatic training, Julie deepened her engagement with early music under the mentorship of Céline Scheen. From an early age, she developed a particular affinity for the Baroque repertoire and had the opportunity to work with Hans-Christoph Rademann and Emma Kirkby at the Bachwoche 2020 festival of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart. Notable stage appearances include the role of Domiziano in Il Tito by Antonio Cesti at the Urania Theater in Cologne (2023) and the Second Witch in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Aachen Theatre (2019).

At the same opera house, she also appeared as Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (2021) and, last season, as the Stewardess in Jonathan Dove’s Flight. She further performed as a Flower Maiden in Wagner’s Parsifal, conducted by Steven Sloane and staged by Lisenka Heijboer Castañón at the Philharmonic Hall in Bochum (2019).

From 2016 to 2020, Julie was a member of the MM Academy at the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels. She is currently a member of the Chamber Choir of Namur and the Chorus of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie. Since 2023, she has also participated in the Live Music Now Yehudi Menuhin e.V. Cologne program and is a member of the Opera Studio of the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, directed by Patrick Leterme.

Most recently, Julie was awarded First Prize at the Gen Re MusikWettbewerb in Cologne, as well as the “Wiener Klassik” Prize at the Vienna International Classic Singing Competition 2024. She is also a Vocatio laureate.
